Floor Services for Retail Environments in London & the Southeast

Sanding, restoration, installation and maintenance for shops, department stores, shopping centres and retail fit-outs. Delivered around trading hours so your business never has to close.

Retail Floors That Perform as Well as They Look

Retail floors take more punishment per square metre than almost any other commercial environment. Constant foot traffic, wheeled trolleys and display units, the drag of heavy fixtures during refit, dropped stock, spillages and the daily cleaning routines required to keep a retail space presentable all degrade a floor finish faster than most operators expect.

At the same time, a retail floor is a front-line element of the customer experience. In a premium independent boutique, a department store or a flagship brand environment, the floor is part of the brand. A scuffed, dull or visibly worn floor undermines the quality of everything displayed above it.

Quicksand Flooring has been delivering floor restoration, installation and maintenance in retail environments across London and the Southeast since 2006. We work around trading hours as standard, phasing projects where necessary to keep stores open throughout, and delivering work overnight so the shop floor is ready before the doors open in the morning.

Our Services

What We Do in Retail Spaces

Floor Sanding and Restoration

The most common project type in retail environments with hardwood flooring. Floors worn by years of customer traffic and retail operations are sanded back to clean timber and refinished to a specification appropriate to the environment. The right finish for a retail floor must handle trolleys, constant footfall and regular cleaning without degrading quickly.

Floor Installation

For new retail fit-outs, store openings or rebrands where hardwood is being introduced for the first time, we supply and install solid, engineered and parquet formats to commercial specification. Full project coordination with the principal contractor and other trades, with handback timed to meet the fit-out programme.

Floor Staining

Brand-led retail environments often have very specific requirements for floor colour and tone. We carry out on-site colour sampling before committing to any staining application, ensuring the result integrates precisely with the brand scheme and surrounding design elements. Colour changes can be achieved without replacement.

Parquet Restoration

Period retail buildings, department stores and market halls frequently retain original herringbone or block parquet. These floors are a distinctive feature worth preserving, and restoration adds genuine character to a retail environment that generic flooring cannot replicate. We restore parquet to its original condition.

Gap Filling

Older retail buildings with original board floors are filled using dust-and-resin and sliver techniques, producing a seamless surface that performs better under wheeled traffic and daily cleaning regimes, and presents significantly better to customers.

Bona Resilient Restoration

For retail environments with vinyl, linoleum or LVT flooring, the Bona Resilient system restores worn resilient flooring to near-original condition without replacement. Particularly valuable in large retail spaces where replacing the floor covering would be a major logistical undertaking.

Maintenance Contracts

Scheduled maintenance programmes that keep retail floors in consistently good condition across a busy trading calendar. In retail environments where the floor is part of the brand presentation, a maintenance contract is the most cost-effective way to ensure it never visibly deteriorates.

How We Work

Around the Trading Day. Every Time.

Overnight and Out-of-Hours Working

All work in trading retail environments takes place outside opening hours. We arrive after close, work through the night and leave the floor clean and ready before the store opens in the morning.

Phased Delivery

For department stores, large format retail and shopping centre units where the floor area cannot be completed in a single overnight session, we phase the work to keep the majority of the trading floor operational throughout.

Dust and Odour Management

Our equipment captures dust at source with integrated extraction. We use waterborne, low-VOC finishes as standard, which minimises odour and allows the store to open the following morning without issue.

Coordination with Fit-Out Programmes

New store openings and refit projects typically involve multiple contractors. We are experienced at working within a principal contractor programme, coordinating floor work around other trades and delivering within the programme.

Shopping Centre Compliance

Working within a shopping centre involves centre management rules, specific out-of-hours access arrangements, loading restrictions and waste disposal requirements. We are familiar with these constraints and manage them as a matter of course.

Project Types

The Work We Typically Carry Out

The following represent the most common project types we encounter in retail environments:

Store Refurbishment Floor Restoration

A retail unit undergoing refurbishment requires the floor to be sanded and refinished as part of the wider programme. We coordinate with the principal contractor, complete the floor within the programme and hand back ready for the fit-out to complete around it.

New Store Fit-Out Installation

Supply and installation of hardwood flooring in a new retail unit, coordinated within the fit-out programme and completed ready for the store to open on schedule. Floor specified to the brand's requirements.

Brand-Led Staining Project

A retail brand requiring a specific floor colour to match its store design across multiple sites. On-site colour sampling carried out to confirm the specification before application, with consistent results across all locations.

Period Retail Building Restoration

An independent boutique or heritage department store with original parquet or board flooring, restored to full working condition. A distinctive floor that becomes a feature of the retail environment.

Shopping Centre Common Area Restoration

Large areas of resilient or hardwood flooring in a shopping centre's common areas, restored during overnight or out-of-hours working. Phased to keep the centre operational and handed back section by section.

Ongoing Maintenance Programme

Scheduled return visits to keep a retail floor in consistently good condition. Annual or bi-annual depending on footfall levels, carried out overnight so trading is never disrupted.
